Developing critical thinking and literacy skills

Enrichment case study (Academy)

Students at Ormiston Bushfield Academy took the opportunity to become roving reporters and editors as part of The Burnet News Club.

The Burnet News Club is a network of school news clubs across the globe that develops young people’s critical thinking and literacy skills, through open discussions about current affairs.

At the time of writing, the academy is in second place on The Burnet News Club leader board because of its students’ mature approach in tackling hard-hitting topics like the rise in gang violence, funding cuts and child poverty.

The success of the students meant that they were awarded the Thought Leader for one of their previous reports on the refugee crisis in Myanmar. To achieve the award, journalists and organisers from The Economist visited the academy to interview students about what they have learnt and why they think they have been so successful.
