Game, set and match at Ormiston Venture Academy

  27 September, 2019

Around 700 pupils at Ormiston Venture Academy took part in a Team Challenge event, with the school setting a new record after a great effort by all who took part to launch the new courts at the school.

Ormiston Venture Academy has been working closely with the Lawn Tennis Association to help deliver this fantastic new facility, which will give more people in the school and the local community the opportunity to give tennis a try for the first time and play more often.

It is a real positive example of how working with local partners helps open up the sport to more people. There is a focus on creating a community tennis programme which will offer people a range of low-cost tennis activities. For example, residents can get a year’s family membership for £30. Those interested in trying tennis are invited to come along this weekend and try tennis for free at the Nature Valley Big Tennis Weekend.

Tony Devonish, Development Officer from the Lawn Tennis Association, said:

“This facility is a great example of how the Lawn Tennis Association are working with local organisations like Ormiston Venture to make tennis more accessible and give more people the chance to play. It was fantastic to see so many of the students enjoy being on court today and hopefully they will go home and tell their mums and dads and brothers and sisters about it and encourage them to give to come here this weekend and give tennis a try.”

Joe Waters, Curriculum link teacher with the Lawn Tennis Association, said:

“It was fantastic to see 703 students getting involved with tennis even if it wasn’t quite tennis weather conditions, however this didn’t dampen the spirits at all. All students, with a wide range of abilities were enjoying the challenge to win the cup for their college. I hope this can be the springboard for the next generation of tennis fans to get involved and playing using our wonderful facility.”

Year 7 student Arthur commented:

“It was great fun competing against other students from other colleges, I wanted to make sure I won as many games as I could. I really enjoy tennis and I am glad that we have our new facilities as I’d love to play more tennis all year round.”
