Ormiston Horizon students cook up a storm to support those in need

  3 February, 2023

Students at Ormiston Horizon Academy have been raising money and volunteering to support the Lou Macari Centre.

The academy’s Year 8 students, with the support of staff made over 50 portions of spaghetti bolognese to donate to the Lou Macari Centre, which supports the homeless and people in need across Stoke-on-Trent. They prepared, cooked and served up all the portions to help those in need.

The amazing efforts of the students and staff form part of the academy’s wider #WeWill cook project, which encourages students to cook food for local community groups. The project, which launched last year, aims to provide food for those in need in the local area and help improve students’ cooking abilities, providing them with valuable life skills.

As part of the project, students have been learning about food from different cultures, how to make low-cost food and about food scarcity in the UK.

Lou, the founder of the Lou Macari Centre and former professional footballer, came down to the academy to pick up the meals and meet with staff and students. Whilst he was in the academy, he was presented with a cheque for over £250 that had been raised for the centre in October.

The Lou Macari Centre has been working hard since 2016 to eradicate homelessness in Stoke-on-Trent and provides accommodation for over 50 people from the local area who need support.

Andy Fitzgibbon, principal said: “I was very proud of our Year 8 students for their hard work making and preparing over 50 meals for the Lou Macari Centre. One of our key values at Ormiston Horizon Academy is responsibility, within the academy and the community more widely, and this fantastic project is a really great example of our students taking responsibility and helping to make a real difference for those in our local community.

“I want to say a huge thank you to all the staff, particularly Miss Wilkes, Miss Elson and Mrs Ridgway, who supervised and enabled our Year 8s to give back in such a positive way. The continued dedication of all of our staff allows our students to be the brightest and best they can be.”
