Ormiston Maritime Academy receive good Ofsted rating

Ormiston Maritime Academy has received a good rating from Ofsted, as the academy was praised for having “high expectations” for students and for prioritising their personal development.

The outcome of the inspection, which took place on 19 and 20 July 2022, reflects the sustained efforts of staff, students and the wider academy community in ensuring a steady upwards trajectory since its “requires improvement” assessment in January 2019.

Key highlights from the report include: 

  • Students are happy attending the academy, and have strong relationships with staff
  • Leaders have a “clear vision” for the academy and have developed an ambitious curriculum for students
  • The variety of extra-curricular activities was noted, which range from sports, to debating, to the combined cadet force (CCF)
  • There was a really positive response from parents, nearly all of whom said they would recommend the academy to someone else
  • Students with special educational needs/and or disabilities (SEND) are well supported, with teachers adapting their teaching to meet the needs of those students
  • Students receive high-quality careers advice and guidance
  • Principal Carrianne Robson was praised for her leadership skills, with inspectors noting her passion and determination. They stated that staff are clear about the impact she has made, with teachers feeling supported by leaders
  • The academy was also praised for its efforts to implement activities to strengthen students’ wellbeing in the aftermath of the disruption caused by the pandemic

Following the positive inspection outcome, the academy will look to build on this success and continue strengthening its provision in the months and years ahead.
