Ormiston SWB Academy students take to the skies as pilots for the day

  3 May, 2024

Two students from Ormiston SWB Academy had the opportunity to become pilots at Wolverhampton Halfpenny Green airport as part of a ‘day in the life of a pilot’ experience.

The students, Cole and Myles, were selected to take part in the experience by the academy after expressing their aspirations to become pilots. The experience had been organised as part of the academies’ Futures Programmes, which provides opportunities for the students to be inspired and motivated to pursue their career ambitions.

During the day, which was organised by Wolverhampton Grammar School, the students were taught about the principles of aircraft and received a 30-minute flying lesson with a trained instructor from Airspace FTS Ltd.

The students experienced zero gravity and were able to use the controls of the aircraft during their lessons, being shown the sights of the West Midlands including the Molyneux Stadium and River Severn all from above.

At the end of the day, the students were thrilled to have been able to experience a day in the life of a pilot and were eager to do it again.

Dan Mason, Principal at Ormiston SWB Academy, said: “I am thrilled that Cole and Myles were able to experience a day in the life of a pilot, and I am particularly grateful to Wolverhampton Grammar School and Airspace FTS Ltd for providing our students with this exciting opportunity.

“We are proud that Ormiston SWB Academy students have access to life-changing experiences that inevitably shape their futures. Through our careers programme, we are committed to understanding what our students’ aspirations are and doing our best to support them in achieving their ambitions and goals.”
