Students donned caps and gowns and were announced individually into the main hall where members of their family eagerly awaited their arrival.

Students were left inspired by Russell’s speech, giving an insight into his own school life and early career. He offered some great words of wisdom about the determination he showed in the lead up to holding such a key leadership position and took questions from students and parents in the audience.

The honour of being the Valedictorian – the student with the closing speech – went to Hamza Khizer, an award which Hamza kept to himself until the last moment in order to surprise his proud parents. Hamza spoke of the importance of being grateful to those around you, and of grasping great opportunities when they arise. Hamza follows in the footsteps of his sister, Amal, who closed the ceremony in 2016.

Other awards from the evening included:

  • Outstanding Effort Award - Annabel Stephenson, Alexander Zasiura and William Davies
  • Outstanding Contribution Award - Mia Childs
  • Outstanding Achievement Award - Tinashe Kanyowa

Naomi Palmer, Principal of Ormiston Victory Academy, said:

"I’m so proud of all of our graduating students today – they’ve all worked so hard to get to this point.

"The whole academy would like to express our gratitude to Russell Martin, who took the time to join us and deliver such an inspiring speech."
