OAT has secured the opportunity to deliver a Teaching Internships Programme for summer (June–July 2023). The aim of the programme is to enable undergraduates studying for a degree in STEM-related subjects the opportunity to experience teaching maths, chemistry, physics, computing and modern foreign languages, before committing to it as a career.

What is the internship programme?

We are running the internship programme this summer, June–July 2023, to give undergraduates the opportunity to experience teaching before they consider it as a career. This programme is part of the UK government’s Get into Teaching service, supporting prospective teachers through their journey into the profession.

If you can answer yes to any of our questions below, this may be the internship for you!

  • Are you an undergraduate studying for a degree in STEM-related subjects and languages, in either chemistry, computing, modern foreign languages, maths or physics?
  • Do you want to find out what it’s like to be a teacher?
  • Have you ever considered an internship?

The placements are offered at OAT schools around the country, including:

West Midlands

Stoke-on-Trent

Norwich

Ipswich

What’s involved?

The programme will offer a structure of activities to gain a broad experience of teaching, and includes:

  • A combination of teaching, running subject-related projects, offering intensive support for children who are struggling, helping with experiments and laboratory work
  • Structured training, shadowing and lesson observation followed by a chance to jointly plan and deliver lessons
  • Access to one-to-one mentors who are good or outstanding classroom teachers in their specialism
  • Opportunities to network with qualified subject specialists
  • Continued contact with your mentor, post-programme
  • Support and advice throughout the year to guide you through the process of applying to train as a teacher, and a guarantee of an interview for any ITT places (at The OAKS, our SCITT)

Access to “keep-in-touch” events after the programme is complete, with additional support from Get into Teaching, including teacher training advisers.
