Meadows pupils bring Christmas cheer to residential home

  18 December, 2020

Pupils from Ormiston Meadows Academy have spread festive cheer to Lapwing Extra Care Retirement Facility by performing a selection of festive songs, and as part of their #iwill project, Kindness in the Community campaign.

Pupils knew that lots of residents will be facing a different kind of Christmas this year, with many unable to celebrate with their families as usual due to restrictions and safety precautions. They wanted to take this opportunity to put a smile on the faces of residents and ensure that some Christmas traditions still went ahead.

The pupils were spread around outside the residential home in Orton Brimbles within their social bubbles, and performed a range of Christmas classics, including ‘Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer’ and ‘Silent Night’.

The performance was part of their social action initiative ‘Ormiston Meadows Kindness in the Community Campaign’, an initiative that looks to foster stronger links between the academy and the wider local community. Before the March lockdown, Meadows were ready to launch their community #iwill project, but with the closure of schools, they had to postpone. Understanding they had to rework their project plan to keep all involved safe, they drew up new plans and ensured their campaign could go ahead. The academy was determined to continue this important work while still adhering to Covid guidelines.

Kelly Moore, Principal, Ormiston Meadows Academy, said,

Being a part of the local community is central to our school life at Ormiston Meadows Academy, and I’m really pleased that pupils have found ways to continue doing that this year. Due to the current restrictions, we have been unable to proceed with as many of the planned social action initiatives as we had hoped, but are looking forward to 2021 when we hope to be able to get out and about properly again.

Ann Kemp, Lapwing Court Manager, said

The residents and staff of Lapwing were thrilled to have the children sing for us. During this difficult time their beautiful voices and their smiling faces brought a huge ray of sunshine and Christmas spirit into the lives of the residents who live here. The children are a real credit to Mrs Moore and the team at Ormiston Meadows Academy and we hope to continue our friendship with the school for many years to come.

Now with 2021 round the corner, Meadows are excited to carry out all their social action events and build their community links further.

The sparkling #will work taking place in our academies is the result of Ormiston Academies Trust (OAT) securing £2 million of funding from the #iwill fund and national charity Ormiston Trust to help young people become involved in youth social action.
