Ormiston Denes Academy launches community transformation project

  13 May, 2019

Pupils at Ormiston Denes Academy in Lowestoft have launched an ambitious social action project this term, aiming to overhaul local walkway ‘The Trams’ to make it more accessible, safe and clean for all users.

The Trams is the main access route for pedestrians and cyclists approaching the school and East Lowestoft from West and South Lowestoft. An under-developed former railway line, the area also connects to the local sports centre and is used by a significant proportion of primary school children and their parents.

With the help of teacher Gemma Calver and Principal Ben Driver, Ormiston Denes pupils are now undertaking the mammoth task of transforming The Trams into a beautiful walkway that is safe for the community of Lowestoft and encourages wildlife back into the local area.

The transformation project is being made possible, in part, by the #iwill campaign and Ormiston Trust. In October 2018, Ormiston Trust provided funding to schools across the OAT network of schools to plan and run social action projects in their communities.

The #iwill social action projects give OAT pupils the chance to work for and alongside their communities whilst learning new skills, developing character and wellbeing and contributing to the areas they live in.

Ben Driver, Principal at Ormiston Denes Academy, said: “At Ormiston Denes Academy, we are proud of our links with the local community. I’m delighted that our students have chosen to undertake a project which will benefit North Lowestoft, not just our school.

“With Mrs Calver’s leadership, the support of local stakeholders and the expertise of Ormiston Academies Trust, I am confident our students will deliver a project that is transformation for the local area.”

The school is keen to hear from any members of the local community who may wish to help them in their ambitious project. If you’re interested in donating some time to assist the pupils, contact Ormiston Denes Academy directly for information on upcoming events.
