Read Aloud initiative supports students at Flegg High Ormiston Academy

  8 October, 2021

Students at Flegg High Ormiston Academy have been lucky enough to receive a wonderful donation from the Norfolk Broads Lions Club, to help access new reading books.

Students at the academy are taking part in a new “Read Aloud” scheme which sees teachers reading to their Year 7 students every day for twenty minutes. Classes are currently reading the gripping novel “The Outsiders” by S. E. Hinton, and the initiative not only helps to improve literacy but also promotes better mental health, wellbeing and a love for reading.

Reading together provides a wonderful collective experience for young people, after such a long period of disrupted learning and isolation.

This initiative has been supported by the Lions Club who have donated money to fund new books for this project, and so it can be extended further into the school year.

For anyone wanting to support the school in raising funds for new books, a Just Giving page has been launched: https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/fleggreadaloud

Principal Jane Bennett, said: “We are very grateful for the generous donation from the Norfolk Broads Lion Club, which has helped to bolster our already very successful and popular “Read Aloud” initiative.

“The “Read Aloud” scheme, with the help of the lions, has enabled us to further support our students to develop a love for reading and to create collective learning experiences which everyone can enjoy. We very much look forward to what’s next to come!”
