Tenbury High Ormiston Academy achieves prestigious careers award

  2 December, 2020

Students and staff at Tenbury High Ormiston Academy have been celebrating after achieving a gold “Quality in Careers Standard” award, marking the academy’s commitment to helping students prepare for their futures.

The school was commended for the “outstanding” careers education it provides, with feedback referencing the committed and high-quality leadership in this area, which inspires students while building their self-esteem and self-awareness, enabling them to develop well informed career plans.

Assessors were also impressed by the academy’s strong links with colleges, universities, apprenticeship providers and employers, which ensure students enjoy activities that extend their learning both inside and outside of the school.

The academy has created a careers programme that runs through every academic year, starting with helping early year groups to establish the type of things they enjoy, before teaching them increasingly more about the world of work and helping them to make choices about their futures.

Lessons are complemented by educational trips and assemblies throughout the year, with students taking visits to colleges and universities, as well as attending mock interview days and having assemblies delivered on apprenticeships and from business leaders in the community.

Tenbury High Ormiston Academy also leverages its strong community links to secure work experience placements that suit students and give them a stronger understanding of the opportunities available to them locally.

Parents are very much included in students’ career development, as they are encouraged to be involved through careers fairs at the school as well as being sent lots of information on what options are available for their children.

Meanwhile, there is a dedicated careers hub in the school which includes student-designed features and holds the careers library and resources for students who want to find out more about what’s out there. Students are also shown how to write CVs, as well as how to safely access career opportunities online.

Careers lead at the school Sally Harrison was a driving force in ensuring careers is a fundamental part of school life at Tenbury High Ormiston Academy.

Vicki Dean, Principal at Tenbury High Ormiston Academy said:

“” am extremely proud that Tenbury High Ormiston Academy has been honoured with this achievement. It’s a testament to the hard work of staff across the school to provide students with a rounded education, and very well deserved.

“At Tenbury High Ormiston Academy, we make sure we are supporting our students with their academic careers, but also with their futures more widely. It’s important that we give them a comprehensive overview of all the opportunities available and support them to make informed choices.”
