Case study: Ben Spindler

Ben Spindler is a 23-year-old aspiring educator with a passion for mathematics and a profound desire to inspire the next generation. Hailing from Cannock, Ben enjoys cheering on his beloved team at Villa Park and indulging in his passions for music and cricket. Before embarking on his journey with The OAKS, Ben pursued studies in mathematics and music at Keele University.

The teaching profession runs in Ben’s family, with relatives working in primary, secondary and leadership roles in education. Inspired by the impactful relationships he formed with his own teachers, particularly in mathematics and music, Ben envisioned himself standing at the front of the classroom, guiding and inspiring students just as his mentors had done for him.

Ben’s decision to teach mathematics was fuelled by his strong academic performance and enjoyment of the subject, coupled with its vast array of potential career pathways. He aspires to showcase these opportunities to his students, motivating them to explore the diverse possibilities within the field of maths.

Opting for The OAKS teacher training programme, Ben felt drawn to its reputation for exceptional support and training. Having completed his undergraduate studies at Keele, he felt confident in both starting the program and remaining in his familiar surroundings.

Preparation for the challenges of teaching included gaining valuable experience at a kids’ camp in America, where he honed essential skills in interacting with and teaching young children music. Ben believes in the power of building positive relationships with his students, viewing this as a crucial aspect of making a lasting impact, both academically and socially.

For Ben, the highlight of The OAKS programme lies in its diverse opportunities, from school placements to outdoor activities, providing invaluable experiences for trainee teachers.

The most rewarding aspect of teaching for Ben is witnessing the satisfaction and pride students feel when they succeed, knowing he played a role in their achievement. His ambitions in teaching centre around inspiring students to succeed and discover opportunities, much like those provided to him through The OAKS.

As an Early Career Teacher (ECT), Ben eagerly anticipates standing in front of his own class, getting to know his students, and exploring different areas of mathematics with them. In 5–10 years, Ben envisions himself progressing within the mathematics department of a school, eventually aiming for a leadership role within the SLT.
