Case study: Melissa Blackmore

Melissa Blackmore, aged 22, embarked on her journey into education with an unwavering dedication to make a positive impact. Having graduated from the University of Worcester with a degree in psychology, Melissa found her calling in teaching, driven by her admiration for the transformative power of educators who fostered strong, positive relationships during her own school years in Wolverhampton.

“Teachers have three loves: love of learning, love of learners and the love of bringing the first two loves together.”

Melissa’s passion for teaching mathematics was ignited by a pivotal experience with a teacher who believed in her potential, despite her initial lack of confidence. Inspired by this mentor’s guidance and encouragement, Melissa aspires to emulate their impact, instilling confidence and a love for mathematics in her students.

Choosing the initial teacher training (ITT) programme at The OAKS was a natural fit for Melissa, who was introduced to the programme during a taster day at Ormiston NEW Academy. The OAKS’ emphasis on providing a comprehensive understanding of educational theories and practices, along with hands-on experience in various educational settings, resonated with Melissa’s desire for a well-rounded training experience.

Throughout her ITT journey, Melissa found invaluable support from The OAKS’ personal tutors, who offered guidance and assistance every step of the way. The programme’s immersive approach, including residential trips and visits to diverse educational environments, enriched Melissa’s training, shaping her into a well-rounded educator.

For Melissa, the essence of teaching lies in building meaningful connections with her students, understanding them as individuals, and nurturing their growth beyond academic achievements. Her long-term aspirations include furthering her career in pastoral care, where she hopes to provide support to vulnerable students and families. Looking ahead, Melissa envisions herself as a confident and inspiring teacher, making a difference in the lives of her students. With a heart full of dedication and a mind brimming with ambition, Melissa epitomises the future of education – a beacon of hope and guidance for generations to come.
