Ormiston Academies Trust celebrates International Women’s Day

  8 March, 2023

Pupils and staff across Ormiston Academies Trust are celebrating the achievements and history of women this International Women’s Day.

Across each of the academies, pupils are getting involved in a number of activities to learn about the wide-ranging contributions women have made throughout history in fields such as STEM, politics, the arts and languages.

This includes at Ormiston Park Academy, where staff have been delivering assemblies on gender equality which are linked to their lifting limits programme. The programme aims to remove barriers for young people to ensure they are able to realise their full potential.

Meanwhile, at Cowes Enterprise College pupils have spent the week learning about different inspirational women and the positive impact they have had on the world such as Dame Kelly Holmes, Marie Curie and Malala Yousafzai.

Both academies, along with many others, have also been decorating their halls and classrooms in purple in celebration of the awareness day and to stimulate discussions over the importance of gender equality.

As part of OAT’s overarching commitment to encouraging high aspiration in all of their pupils, each academy is dedicated to bolstering diverse voices all year round and looks forward to showcasing and celebrating the importance of this work on International Women’s Day each year.

Rachel Kitley, principal at Cowes Enterprise College said: “A key part of International Women’s Day is about celebrating the strong community of women around us and making sure we continue to support each and every one of them to ensure they have the tools to thrive in whatever it is they want to achieve.

“At Cowes Enterprise College, we will be honouring the day through a variety of initiatives and activities, helping our students to recognise the many barrier’s women around the world still face, while celebrating some inspirational women and their successes and triumphs.”

Justine Kenny, national director of people and culture said: “A central aspect of our approach as a Trust is to empower our pupils to be able to achieve anything they put their minds to – a key part of this work is providing inspiration for our pupils by showcasing the success and triumphs of women throughout history and within OAT itself.

“We are committed to driving equality, diversity, and inclusion and to being a truly inclusive trust – that includes us recognising and addressing the barriers to success that women face, to ensure our young people are part of the solution to achieving equality within our society.”
