Pupils at Ormiston Cliff Park Primary Academy paid a visit to Parliament recently, where they had the chance to learn more about the day-to-day work of an MP.

The children, who are past and present members of the School Council, took part in a tour of Parliament and sat in on a debate in the House of Commons.

During the debate, they heard from former Prime Minister Theresa May, who was giving a speech.
A number of other notable MPs were present in the Central Lobby during the pupils’ tour, including Penny Mordaunt, Liam Fox, Stephen Crabb and Iain Duncan-Smith. They also had the opportunity to see Westminster Hall, where the lying in state of Queen Elizabeth II took place last year.

Afterwards, the children took part in an interactive workshop, where they discussed laws and debating.
Finally, the academy’s local MP, Brandon Lewis, came to visit the children and spoke about his role in Westminster and Great Yarmouth as well as answering the children’s questions. It was fascinating for the children to see the parallels between their roles in the School Council and those of the MPs, working together to debate ideas and to represent the views of others.

Kate Rutherford, principal said: “This was a great chance for our pupils to learn more about the ins and outs of politics, which as school council members they take a keen interest in. We were really pleased to be able to provide an opportunity to expand their knowledge and develop their interests, and I know they all got a lot out of the day. I was also really pleased that throughout the visit, our pupils were excellent ambassadors for the academy.”

Brandon Lewis, MP for Great Yarmouth said: “I really enjoyed meeting with pupils at Ormiston Cliff Park Primary Academy, and discussing my role as their local MP, as well as chatting about how they represent their classmates through their School Council. They had lots of interesting ideas, and I was really impressed with their dedication to their roles in the academy.”
