Twelve Year 10 students from Ormiston Venture Academy have walked over 32 miles in pursuit of their Bronze Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) Award.

In the gruelling summer heat, the two student teams set off with their 65-litre backpacks packed and spirits high, ready to face a challenging two-day journey that would test their physical and mental limits.
In the picturesque backdrop of Baconsthorpe, students hiked for a minimum of six hours each day and covered over 73,000 steps across the weekend. The keen explorers utilised their orienteering and map-reading abilities to cross the scenic beauty of Norfolk.

Throughout the expedition, the young adventurers worked to fulfil team goals through pooling their resources, communicating effectively, and collaborating to overcome obstacles. Without access to their phones, the students learned to rely on their own resourcefulness, disconnected from the distractions of the digital world and fully immersed in the present moment.

The student’s determination, perseverance, and resilience were essential in facing the diverse terrain and scorching weather, with crucial support from dedicated staff at Ormiston Venture Academy to ensure welfare and security.

Successfully completing their journey, the students looked back on their achievement and the crucial life skills and independence they have learnt from the transformative experience. These skills will undoubtedly prove invaluable in their future endeavours, enabling them to face new challenges with resilience and determination.

The Bronze DofE expedition empowers young individuals to embrace a spirit of adventure and cultivate a lifelong appreciation for the outdoors by engaging with nature and stepping outside their comfort zones. It is not merely a physical feat; it offers students an opportunity for personal growth and self-discovery as push beyond their limitations and gain a renewed appreciation for the beauty of the outdoors.

Gemma Lowe, DofE manager at the academy said: ” I am very proud of our students for this amazing achievement; they faced challenges out of their comfort zones as they proudly displayed our ethos of the Venture way with resilience and determination on their travels.’”
