Students at Ormiston Victory Academy have got a taste for formula racing after participating in the Greenpower Kit Car Challenge.

With over 60 schools participating in the scheme from across the country, a team of students at Ormiston Victory were involved with the process from start to finish. This included building, furnishing and decorating the F24 race car, and then racing it at the Greenpower event at the Lotus Test Track in Norwich.

The six students who took part on the day drove across two races, which included pit stops. They were in competition with other students to see which car could travel the furthest in 90 minutes.

Victory students wowed at the event with a chassis-build car and carbon fibre bodywork production, the only one of its kind across the entire event.

The academy was sponsored by Motus Track and Van Mercedes-Benz Norwich, who were keen to engage students and demonstrate some of the amazing local career opportunities available. A mechanic from Mercedes supported the students with putting the car together and was there to help out on the day. Students were also kitted out in Mercedes overalls.

The project has linked students with local businesses and opened their eyes to a number of job opportunities available. Meanwhile, it has advanced their learning across all of the STEM subjects, as students employed a range of skills to build, develop and run the car.

Following the success of the event and how much students enjoyed the project, the academy is planning to enter every year from now on.

Dan Grimes, lead teacher of design technology and engineering said: “We are already inspired to come back with a much-improved package and we plan to develop cross-curricular links with science, computer science and mathematics. This will help us upgrade the car and get the most out of the process for our team in the years to come. I am so proud of the hard work and commitment that everyone has put into this project and can’t wait to see where it takes us.”
