Pupils and staff shine as OAT celebrates ninth annual awards ceremony

  20 March, 2023

On Thursday 16 March, pupils, staff and family members came together from across Ormiston Academies Trust for its ninth annual awards ceremony.

The awards were a chance to celebrate the many individual and team achievements and contributions over the past year.

This year, the event was hosted at The Grand Hotel Birmingham, a hub for royalty and celebrities alike. OAT pupils and staff became the latest – but by no means the least – stars to grace the halls.

Kicking things off was an incredible Hairspray medley from the students of George Salter Academy, who gave an insight into the breadth of performing talent at the Trust.

There were also fantastic performances from talented Year 11 pianist from Flegg High Ormiston Academy, Katie who performed during the pre-ceremony reception, and Year 7 Lizanne a student from Ormiston SWB Academy, who sang solo in front of over 200 guests.

Both pupils and staff took to the stage to collect their awards, while those who had nominated them shared poignant stories about how the winners had overcome various challenges and shown real perseverance and community spirit.

Aled Haydn Jones, head of BBC Radio 1, did a fantastic job of presenting the ceremony, keeping energy high throughout while ensuring each person got the chance to be celebrated.

Meanwhile Nick Hudson, CEO delivered an inspiring speech, reflecting on the numerous achievements of the past year. There is lots for everyone at the trust to be proud of, with award winners and nominees providing just a snapshot into the many successes of pupils, staff and the wider community.

Despite having academies across the country, OAT remains a close-knit family, and as well as being a moment for celebration, events like the awards ceremony are an opportunity for people from across the trust to come together.

Awards were presented by a number of partners, whose generosity made the evening possible. They included Barker, EDU-Lettings, Ginger Energy, Zurich Municipal, LMP Education, PLMR, IRIS Education, Capita, Reappraise Consulting and Ormiston Trust.

Nick Hudson, CEO said: “This year’s winners are shining examples of our values and we are proud to see how they continue to exemplify our ethos. We are delighted to be celebrating their achievements this evening. We received an impressive number of entries and would like to applaud everyone who was nominated this year for continuing to inspire us all through their success.

“We are also celebrating a fantastic year for improving outcomes and continuing to achieve strong results. We are proud of the way our academies have continued to operate at the heart of their communities, and embed a charitable, thoughtful and giving approach into everything they do.

“Our annual awards ceremony aims to celebrate these successes and more, and we would like to thank our awards partners who have also provided additional support and sponsorship, as of course has Ormiston Trust. Without their support, the awards ceremony would not be possible.”
